Older Workers Go Online for Job Loss and Life Support
I read a touching story on CNN.com this morning that I wanted to share with older job seekers.
We talk a lot about job loss and taking your job search online in separate contexts. We haven’t addressed the fact that people are using the Web as not only to look for work but also as a tool for economic recovery and a cure for isolation. The current economy is causing many people to feel anxiety and depression, or to feel lost and alone. It’s always easier to cope with loss/grief/hardship with a little support.
This morning’s article talks about Jean Lindsay, a 67 year-old job seeker with two Master’s degrees who began to panic in her job search when she couldn’t land a job in the gardening center at Lowe’s, a home-improvement store. The article says Lindsay felt such angst after the job interview, “she stayed up most of the night in the fits of an anxiety attack — vomiting and huddling under the bedcovers with her two dogs.”
“God, I felt like I was falling off the ends of the earth,” she said.
Finally, one day Lindsay sat down in front of the Web cam her brother got her for Christmas and she shared her story, asking for support from anyone out there going through the same experience as she.
“I know I can count on you to send me great letters of support and cheer,” Lindsay told viewers on CNN’s iReport.com. “And remember, if you’re going through this, I’m going through it too. There are lots of us going through this.” Watch Lindsay’s post
Lindsay says sharing her failures as well as successes online is cathartic, but she also hopes it’s helpful for people in similar circumstances.

How could I send an e-mail to Jean Lindsay? She could be me. I’m an older worker, laid off for the first time in my life and I think talking to someone who knows exactly what I’m going through would help. I am so discouraged.
Thank you.
