Older Workers Go Online for Job Loss and Life Support
I read a touching story on CNN.com this morning that I wanted to share with older job seekers.
We talk a lot about job loss and taking your job search online in separate contexts. We haven’t addressed the fact that people are using the Web as not only to look for work but also as a tool for economic recovery and a cure for isolation. The current economy is causing many people to feel anxiety and depression, or to feel lost and alone. It’s always easier to cope with loss/grief/hardship with a little support.

Six-in-Ten Workers Over the Age of Sixty Postponing Retirement Due to Economic Downturn, Finds CareerBuilder Survey
-Career Expert Offers Tips for Mature Workers to Navigate Tough Economy–
CHICAGO, March 17, 2009 – While the economic crisis is being felt by nearly every segment of the working population, one group of workers is faced with particularly tough decisions regarding their futures. Six-in-ten workers (60 percent) over the age of 60 say they are putting off their retirement due to the impact of the U.S. financial crisis on their long-term savings, according to a survey by CareerBuilder. Set Yourself Apart: Companies Receive 75 Resumes Per Open Position
In a recent nationwide survey, CareerBuilder.com found that nearly one-in-four human resources managers said they receive, on average, more than 75 resumes for each open position; 42 percent receive more than 50 resumes. This survey was conducted online among 252 human resources professionals and 8,038 U.S. employees.
Other key findings:
- The vast majority of human resources managers (78 percent) reported at least half of the resumes they receive from various recruitment resources are from unqualified candidates.
- Thirty-eight percent of human resources managers report they spend one to two minutes reviewing a new application; 17 percent spend less than one minute.

Use Your Age to Your Advantage at Work
No matter how old you are, there is always a label attached to your age — especially in the workplace.
“Perceptions about older workers often dominate the hiring process,” says Jean Erickson Walker, Ed.D, author of “The Age Advantage: Making the Most of Your Midlife Career Transition.” “Today’s 60 is yesterday’s 40. People aren’t checking out Sun City. They are healthy, energetic and competitive and determined to remain productive well into their 70s. They aren’t going anywhere near that rocking chair on the front porch if they can help it.”
